'The History of the Arts and Crafts Garden'
A lecture by Stephen Harmer, Head Gardener, Tonbridge School for the Tennant Lecture Series
Wednesday 18 January 2023
Drinks in The Lowry Dining Room from 7.30 pm
Lecture in Big School at 8.00 pm
Many people have commented on the transformation of the gardens at Tonbridge School. They lift the spirits, and those responsible for this are the Head Gardener, Stephen Harmer and his team. Stephen has a master's degree in Garden History and teaches at RHS Wisley. He has a range of talks about gardens, from ancient Egyptian garden design to the post-modernist garden. However, his favourite subject is the History of the Arts and Crafts garden, and he has incorporated some of their principles in his gardening here at Tonbridge. Stephen will discuss how the Arts and Crafts garden movement came about, he will introduce us to some of the people who influenced it and he will tell us about what caused its sudden demise. Come and be inspired, as you prepare your garden for the spring.
This event is fully accessible.
