Old Tonbridgian, David Norton (FH 54-58) has co-produced a televised series for Sky Arts, which tells the stories of Vienna's greatest composers including Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn and Schubert. The programme is available to watch and download online.

David writes:

Sons of Vienna was developed by Director and Producer, Ron Shay and myself as a video series featuring surely the most fascinating musical succession of all time. In the musical, magical city of Vienna the composers’ baton was handed down from Josef ‘Papa’ Haydn, through the music of many, all the way to the Strauss family. It is a succession that may never be repeated in any musical sphere.

Our production puts this timeless music in the context of the fascinating, often fraught lives these composers led. They are not simply dusty eyeless busts on music school shelves. Musical giants they were certainly, but as well they were real people, facing the same challenges of health, wealth and love that face us all.

The music of this disparate group who made Vienna their home and their eternal shrine was not written for the gloomy appreciation of a serious minded elite. This amazing heritage is the inspiration of so many varied composers of today. The music of these Sons of Vienna is there for everyone - that would be all of us who appreciate what music brings to our lives.

The stars of the series are young, talented musicians from all over the world. Every single one is a professional delight, with knowledge and respect for those who have given them their music. The enthusiasm for what these performers do and the pride in their craft is infectious.

As film makers we count ourselves so fortunate; for us each performance was a special treat, which we are now delighted to share.
