On Saturday 15 June, David Jackson (WH 08-13), took part in the annual 'Round the Island Race' as part of the crew on Xanaboo, GBR390X. The race takes place around the Isle of Wight, with a distance of around 50 nautical miles taking competitors around the island, starting and finishing at Cowes.
Participants battled blustery conditions throughout the race, with wind speeds recorded up to 54 knots and showers throughout the day.
Organisers called the race a 'wet and wild' edition, with 'extreme' weather impacting the yachts taking part.
Of 939 entries originally scheduled to start, only 571 embarked on the course due to the challenging weather, and 418 of those retired early, meaning that only 153 completed the race.
David and crew managed to earn the impressive accolade of finishing second in IRC (overall) class, with a time of 5 hours and 37 minutes despite the challenging winds and rain, which saw two boats crash and many others have to withdraw due to damage sustained in the gales.
A warm congratulations from Tonbridge to David and the crew of Xanaboo on this achievement.
