OT Events & Reunions |
In November, the school hosted nearly 230 Old Tonbridgians and guests during its reunion for OTs of the 1960s. We were delighted to welcome OTs from across the globe, including those from Australia, France, Italy and Spain. We were also joined by 8 members of the Common Room. In his address to OTs, Headmaster, James Priory celebrated the record number of OTs in attendance, paying special thanks to the reunion’s international guests. Reflecting on the two decades of school life represented by guests who attended the school between 1955-75, he added: “It’s not just the geographical span that makes Big School feel, metaphorically at least, even bigger today.” The Headmaster thanked Common Room guests, David and Marion Kemp, Geoff Allibone, George Gilbart-Smith, David Robins, John and Mary Smallman-Smith; also paying tribute to ‘the inimitable’ John Gibbs, who reached 50 years of service to Tonbridge School in 2019. “The November edition of The Tonbridgian in 1969 announced John’s appointment, alongside that of David Robins, with an ironically brief statement given the length of tenure to come: “We hope that their stay at Tonbridge will be a happy one.” I think fifty years later we can probably say that that’s been true!” he added. On display at the event was a selection photographs and literature from the school’s archive collection, as well as the new 1960s archive booklet ‘This is Tonbridge: 1960-1970’. The publication was developed to mark the 2019 OT Reunion and features personal stories, photographs and souvenirs from Old Tonbridgians that experienced the decade first-hand.
