| Zak Crawley (WH 11-16) hit his first century for England on day one of their final warm-up match before the Test series in Sri Lanka. On 12 March Crawley hit his first century for England on day one of their final warm-up match before the Test series in Sri Lanka. The opener scored 105 as England reached 354-3 on the first day of a four day match against the Sri Lanka Board President’s XI in Colombo. However, that match, and the subsequent two day Test series, was abandoned due to the global health crisis. Speaking to BBC Sport before the match was called-off, England’s batting coach Graham Thorpe said: “He’s nowhere near the finished article. Zak is only 22 years old, but we’re really excited about him as a player after the last three or four months around him.” Crawley made his Test debut in New Zealand in November and averages 27.33 from his four Test appearances after scoring his maiden 50 in the final Test in South Africa in January. In South Africa, Crawley became the youngest Kent cricketer to score 50 in a Test match for England, a month younger than Colin Cowdrey (FH 46-51) who was five days shy of his 22nd birthday when he scored his 50 in his first Australian Test match in 1954. Earlier in March, Kent Cricket announced that Crawley had signed an extension to his contract, committing to the club for the next three summers. So even if cricket is under threat this summer, we can look forward to seeing Crawley in action in Canterbury in the years ahead. |
